Running Food

Running Food

PostBy nlwest » Wed Oct 06, 2010 11:09 am

Does anyone get incredibly hungry after they work out? When I first started I found myself eating everything in sight just because my body was craving it so badly. Unfortunately I didn't consume anything very healthy. :(

Right now I have learned to curb those cravings. I make a protein smoothie each morning after an hour workout (30 minutes of running). I am still hungry afterwards - but it isn't nearly as bad.

What do you usually eat after you run?

Protien is good, and it's a great way to help build up those leg muscles and not metabolize other muscle in your body right after a run. You also need carbs as well, to help replenish glycogen stores. Here's a great article about eating and drinking for running by Pete Pfitzinger. Explains it pretty well.

I usually eat a banana and drink a 1.5 scoops of protein/milk/water combination after a run. Gives me the protein I need with a quick shot of banana goodness that helps me replenish quickly.
PR's: 400m - 1:24, 800m - 2:57, 1600m - 6:09, 5K - 23:20, 5M - 39:34, 10M - 1:42:15 (slow!)
Goals: 5:59 mile, 19:59 5k!

Thanks! After each morning work out I have been eating protein with a banana mixed into it (to make it taste better). It really does help to restore my energy and keep me going the rest of the day!

The article was very helpful! Thanks! :)

One of my all time favorites is almonds. I keep them in the house at all times and even carry a little container with me. These help curb my appitite. I eat a handful with breakfast and if I get cravings after I work out I reach for them as well.

I have eaten bananas as well if I have them on hand. I have never tried almonds though. I usually grab something quick such as a granola bar or an apple as I am usually in a hurry.
